Sinophobia in Canada's Mainstream Media
Recent mainstream coverage of China's political influence in the West suggests we are in the midst of another Red Scare. Journalists should absolutely be critical of China's authoritarian government, just as we should be critical of our own governments — but the Canadian media's coverage of China seems by and large to reinforce anti-Chinese narratives.
This panel will discuss Sinophobia in mainstream media coverage of China, and how journalists can be critical of the Chinese government without perpetuating anti-Asian hate. Perhaps this isn't entirely possible, but there are certainly ways to at least minimize the harm.
